In the last month or so, I’ve been raving to anyone who would (or had to) listen on Twitter about just how good R.E.M.‘s new album, Accelerate, is. It’s good. Damn good. In fact, it’s outstanding. It’s their first really hard album since Monster and might be one of their best ever, frankly. It’s certainly the best album I’ve bought this year and I can’t recommend it enough.
Getting back to the renaissance, the hard rocking goodness of Accelerate got me to dig out some of their older stuff. Want to remember how good R.E.M. was in earlier years? Check out 1988’s Eponymous. It’s sort of a pseudo-greatest hits and includes some outstanding music; the perfect album for waxing nostalgic about how good the band has been and for how long.
