I haven’t had time to write about it, but last weekend I made my decision. It seemed apparent that the best way to answer both of my questions was to go back to the Apple store and do a little side-by-side, hands-on comparison. So I did. Besides, any excuse to get the the store will work in a pinch, right?
It was like they knew I was coming; the store wasn’t crowded and I was able to find a 17” MBP with a matte screen immediately next to a 15” MBP with a glossy screen. Perfect.
First, the screen. Glossy is out. Way out. I just can’t do it. There’s far too much glare for my tastes. In any kind of light, the reflection is just too distracting. The table shook while I was looking at the 17” model and my peripheral vision picked up the glare shimmering on the 15” next to me. It might look spectacular in low light, but I’m not willing to assume that I’ll always be working in ideal conditions. I know better.
Next, the size. I’m still concerned about the size of the 17” model. Not the weight – hell, I was infantry; I’ve carried much more weight than this – but the physical dimensions. That baby’s a big’un. That said, I don’t think I can pass up the resolution. Looking at the two models side-by-side, the difference in available real estate was remarkable. There’s just so much more room to work. Now that I’ve seen it in that kind of stark reality, I can’t be without it.
So there you have it. In the coming months – after I’ve returned from several upcoming trips – I’ll be buying a brand-spanking new 17” MacBook Pro.
